Plot Summary

Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket

Tom is the protagonist and he illustrates the balance between what people usually prioritize their lives and spend the most time on rather than what ends up being the most important investment of that time. Tom has tremendously invested himself, including all of his leisure time, in completing research to gain a higher position at the grocery store where he is currently employed. In the process of working so hard, Tom is neglectful to his wife, Clare, and his life outside of his job.

By: Nick Nicholson and Dr. Harber Mathis

ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE

This is an example of Post Modernism and how it is realistic and dreamlike. Those two are combined.

“He got up… stepped to the living-room window beside the desk, and stood breathing on the glass, watching the expanding circlet of mist, staring down through the autumn night at Lexington Avenue, eleven stories below” (Finney 7-9).

"... It was not actually true that he had to work tonight though he very much wanted to" (Finney). The quote comments on himself, and shows his thoughts.
