Vilification of Carbohydrates

Why did I choose this topic?

by: Kiandra Franklin

  • I chose this topic because the myth of carbohydrates has always interested me.
  • Before taking Exercise Science and this course, I also believed that carbs were bad and full of fats.

Fat, Carbs, Sugar, & Salt: Friend or Foe?

Myth Busters

"The organ that is the most dependent on glucose is the brain; without glucose, the brain will die. The South Beach Diet works by first eliminating all carbohydrate sources, forcing the body to convert all other energy sources to glucose so that the brain can run properly. This means that the protein and fat aren't able to carry out their normal functions. "

Major diet trends are causing people to cut out the source of energy they need the most for their bodies to function properly. These trends cause people to believe that carbohydrates are being stored as fat in the body because it gets converted to glucose (sugar) which is looked at as negative source.

In the text...

The text stated that people believed that their bodies were holding on to fat because they were consuming too much of it causing them to switch to fat-free foods because it seemed like a better alternative. The Atkins Diet made way for people to believe these myths.

All Carbohydrates Are Not Created Equal

Dr. Julian Whitaker believes that its all about eating the correct carbohydrates because some carbs can cause a rise in blood pressure such as foods made white flour, sugar, or other sweeteners.Fiber-rich vegetables, beans, grains, and fruits, release sugars more slowly into the bloodstream

This goes to show that not all carbohydrates are bad and some can be very beneficial to the body.
