Article

  • The first playable female character was Toby "Kissy" Masuyo in the game Baraduke (1985). However the first character seen mainstream in the United States was Samus Aran from the game Metroid (1986) who wasn't actually revealed as a female till the very end of the game, where sadly even 80's graphics can still sexualize characters
  • Lara Croft, the protagonist of Tomb Raider (1996) is among the best-known strong, fictional women in a variety of media. April Ryan from The Longest Journey (1999) has been compared to Lara Croft in that respect

  • Japanese video games tend to be far more diverse and inclusive—many of the most prominent LGBTQ characters are from Japanese games, and it’s rare to see a title without a prominent female character. And, despite Japan’s fairly homogeneous population, many games include racially diverse casts.
