Social Structure
Venice
- *Venice was founded in the 5th century along the coast of the Adriatic Sea
- It was a very good trading era for Venice in the 13th century because of all the items they got from Asia
- Venice had their trading posts as far as the black sea to trade with other people
- The Western Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean controlled most of the Adriatic Sea ports an the East Mediterranean Sea.
- Venice also became a very importation city state for many reasons including, its stable government, Its famous university, Its merchant class that supported the arts Ect.
Genoa
- *The Social Structure was based on your role in society Ex. there was the King, Higher Clergy, Nobles/Nights/Lower Clergy and Serfs/ peasants
- The monarchs gave the soldiers land in return for their military support. Other times the richer nobles were put through diplomacy and made alliances with other places
- The serfs normally served in the war for Europe (when their was one) and in return the nobles gave them protection when they were under attack
- Most of the people were serfs but the land was separated into knights and the lesser nobles on the other side
- The nobles promise was to to give the King and Queen soldiers and knights to surprise them when there was a war
- Genoa is located in the northwestern par of Italy and is the main commercial port city
- Most of the trade in Italy crossed through Genoas land.
- Around the year 1261, Genoas traders developed markets at key ports on the sea, they exported popular items such as olive oil, wool, imported furs, corn, spices, Persian goods, and wine
- The wealthy families helped with the expansion of the city and trade markets
- *Genoa grew a lot through the year and because of the economic success, the cities population increased to about 100,000 by the year 1400s.
The Black Death
Florence
Growth of the Italian City States
- It started in 1347 when trading ships returned from the Black Sea in Sicily with dead or dying sailors
- *Outbreaks of the plague continued through Europe till the late 1700's
- The Black Death was Such a problem it occurred at least 6 times between 1347 and 1410 lasting 4-6 months
- After 500 years, after the first appearance of the black death Scientists figured out it was caused by rats
- Even though rats were apart of Europe's everyday life, they carried fleas and very deadly bacteria
- Florence is located in the north central city state was built on the Arno River
- *By 1338 Florence had a population of over 100,000 citizens
- Florence was considered one of the four largest cities in Europe
- Florence became a very wealthy city-state and bought other cities around it such as Nevorno, Arezzo, and Lucca
- Florence became the center of the Renaissance on over time the Medici family took over the city.
- *By the 14th century Pairs, Florence, Venice and Genoa were the largest cities in Europe.
- The increased demand for food and other products lead to changes in the way Europeans lived
- New industries began to grow that specialized for goods and trade and people moved to the European cities to work for these industries
- Communities started to become so powerful from trade, banking and industry they became city-states
- Citizens of Europe began to feel a longer sense of belonging to their new larger communities as they grew
Beginning of the Renaissance
- *Europe was still a society of the Middle Ages when the Renaissance began in the 1300's
- During the middle ages most Christian Europeans shared their religious worldview that God was the center of human existence
- During the Renaissance Italy changed a lot, what was happening in Italy changed more rapidly and their society was moving to a new period
- Most people especially the wealthy donated to the Roman Catholic Church hoping that God would reward them with an after-life in heaven
- Most people before and after the Renaissance worked for the Catholic Church; before the Renaissance the art and architecture was based off religion
