Volcanoes

Fast Facts

What is a volcano, and how is it formed?

A volcano is an opening in the earth's surface, from which gas and hot molten rock escape from.

About 30km beneath the ground, it is hot enough to melt rock. Sometimes this melted rock, known as magma or molten rock forces it's way to the earth's surface, and forms a volcano.

  • Sometimes, a volcano explodes in a large blast, which can be more powerful the most powerful bomb ever invented

  • Volcanoes are named after the roman god of fire 'Vulcan'.

  • Lava is always 800 degrees Celsius and can get up to 1200 degrees Celsius, which is twelve times hotter than boiling water.

  • The worlds largest volcano is 7000m high and is known as Cerro Aconcagua.

Where Are Volcanoes Found?

Volcanoes are found in many parts of the world, however most of them are found in the pacific ocean. The ring of fire is a volcanic chain which surrounds the pacific ocean. It is famous for it's regular earthquake and volcanic activity. More than half the earths volcanoes that are above the sea level form some part of the ring.

Conclusion

Thank you for listening to our presentation.

We will now make our model volcano explode by adding vinegar which is an acid to bicarbonate of soda which is a base. This then causes a chemical reaction, and releases carbon dioxide gasses. We will also add red food dye to make it look more like real lava.

Stages of a volcano

How does a volcano erupt?

Scientists have sorted volcanoes in to three main categories; active, dormant and extinct. An active volcano is one that has recently erupted and there is a possibility that it may erupt soon. A dormant volcano is one that hasn't erupted in a long time but is sort of sleeping and there is a possibility that it may erupt in the future. An extinct volcano is one that hasn't erupted in thousands of years and there's no possibility of eruption any more.

Just underneath the surface of the earth is a layer called mantle. This is made up of plates that are always moving and shifting. When the plates separate, it creates heat, and causes the mantle to melt into magma. The magma comes up through the cracks, and between the plates. It then spreads out and cools down.

Volcanoes That Are Erupting Now

There are many volcanoes in the world that are currently erupting. Some of them are mount Etna in Italy, Sinabung in Indonesia, White Island in New Zealand, Kileauea in Hawaii, and mount Vesuvious in Italy.

Structure of a Volcano

A volcano consists of a pipe, a vent, a crater, a cone and a magma chamber.

The vent is the opening to the earths surface. The pipe is a tube in the volcano, in which magma rises to the surface. The crater is a vent where volcanic gasses and ash come out from. Finally the magma chamber is where the magma or lava is stored.
