Relation to Gangsters

The Roaring 20’s :

The United States Nationalism was high after WWI victory

Survival of the influenza epidemic of 1918

strong economy led to many parties and liberal life

A revolution of morale standards

“rebirth” of African American influence( Harlem Renaissance)

An era of fun and parties (mentality leads to Great Depression)

Party Life style

  • A community of funseeking attitude had rose
  • Cocaine had been introduced and became famous to the community. An easy transportable good.
  • Most of all, alcohol had been prohibited by the 18th amendment (manufacture, sale and transport).
  • This was seen as an opportunity by many mafias, gangsters and smugglers.
  • People were looking for illegal ways of obtaining alcohol, making organized crime necessary and a flourishing business.

Gangsters

  • Gatsby was an active bootlegger
  • Does not really mention it but he was probably involved with gangs because of his career you tend to have to negotiate with organized crime groups
  • He gained so much money in five years as a bootlegger so he would have to be a very successful one
  • Alcohol was often smuggled from Canada and New York being so close to the border, it is very possible that is where Gatsby smuggled the alcohol
  • His enormous parties with all the alcohol shows how easy it was for him to obtain alcohol

Gangster's Affect

  • Competition of selling illegal drugs, mainly alcohol, rose between gangs and mafias
  • Competition for turf and cities to whom does each gang or mafia get to distribute led to disputes
  • Even though it was a time of many advancements and economic prosperity, there was plenty of violence do to gang wars and struggle to gain territory. Mainly in the cities
  • Led to the creation of “speakeasies” and “bootleggers”.
  • In the 1920’s because of the drastic growth of organized crime, crime rates were one of the highest in United States history.

Gangster's Methods and Strategy

  • Intimidation towards other people and gangs(setting an example).
  • Bribery
  • Foreign exportation and importation
  • Gaining as much as territory
  • Alliances with other gangs or mafias
  • Scapegoating
