What is 'White Collar Crime'?

"a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation"

Why are white collar crimes under-represented in official statistics?

  • Problems with detection
  • Ambiguity around definition
  • No "immediate" victim
  • The powerful position of the perpetrators
  • Problems with definition

Economic Effects on Society

  • If a company suffers fraud it must make up for its costs, which automatically means higher prizes for consumers.
  • Employees go through hush working conditions this includes less pay or even cutting of jobs.
  • Economic hardship for the average citizen&consumer as a result of increased prizes &decreased services.
  • Fraud reduces government resources for health, even education and welfare services.
  • White collar crime leaves the country in short of billions and billions.
  • Sociologists believe that this crime is harmful to society as it is usually committed by people expected to set moral example.

It should be note that white-collar crime represents one of the fastest-growing types of crime in the world. Nearly every category of white-collar crime has increased in incidence in recent years.

  • White collar crime can be more brutal to society since its impact has a collective harm because the actions of one affect the lives of thousands of people.
  • It can take several years after a fraud has been committed for it to be detected, investigated and brought to court (if at all).
  • Therefore, the full impact of the credit crunch on fraud is yet to be seen and the figures we see now show only part of the picture.

Homer Simpson rationalizes committing insurance fraud by figuring that the only effect will be that his boss will have to go without buying an “ivory back-scratcher.”
