The Battle of Cisterna

End State

  • German forces held Cisterna for four more months.
  • Detrimental decline in Ranger influence in WWII.
  • Slowed Allied takeover in Southern Italy.

Casualties

  • 6 out of 767-man infiltration force made it back to friendly lines.
  • 4th bat. never recovers.
  • 1st, 3rd, and 4th were disbanded for the remainder of WWII.

January 30th, 1944

  • Midnight
  • Small force to infiltrate Cisterna (1&3 Ranger Bat.).
  • 4th Bat. spearhead an attack up Conca-Cisterna rd to link up with 1st and 3rd.
  • Two infantry reg. attack to seize objectives along HWY 7.

Shit Hits the Fan

  • Dug in positions and minefields halted the 4th bat.
  • open terrain provided no concealment for 1st and 3rd bat.
  • 4th bat. was overwhelmed in their attempt to link up with 1st and 3rd.

Why Cisterna?

  • Town acted as a communication port.
  • Controlled the German lines of communication between the Gustav Line and Rome.
  • Geographical advantage in advancing towards Rome.

  • If allied forces took Rome, they would capture a key German stronghold.
