January 30th, 1944
- Midnight
- Small force to infiltrate Cisterna (1&3 Ranger Bat.).
- 4th Bat. spearhead an attack up Conca-Cisterna rd to link up with 1st and 3rd.
- Two infantry reg. attack to seize objectives along HWY 7.
Shit Hits the Fan
- Dug in positions and minefields halted the 4th bat.
- open terrain provided no concealment for 1st and 3rd bat.
- 4th bat. was overwhelmed in their attempt to link up with 1st and 3rd.
Setting the Stage
Why Cisterna?
- Town acted as a communication port.
- Controlled the German lines of communication between the Gustav Line and Rome.
- Geographical advantage in advancing towards Rome.
- January 1944
- Allied forces stalled against German forces at what was known as the Gustav Line.
- The German's guarded the southern approaches to Rome.
- If allied forces took Rome, they would capture a key German stronghold.

- Allied amphibious landing to the north.
