The End.
People living in the area at the time of the issue didn’t do much to manage the problem as all they did was just relocating to other areas to protect themselves and for their own good, companies and factory owners also did the same and some even closed their industries and left Pyrmont-Ultimo looking like a dump.
However the government created The City West Development Corporation and the Better Cities Program which was extremely successful in managing the urban decline and growth issue as the Pyrmont-Ultimo area has completely transformed this area from a run down, abandoned site to a new and successful community area and also an industrial workforce. Recent statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the population of the Pyrmont-Ultimo area has steadily increased to 18,731 people including 4,013 families living in the area.
Many people responded to the issues of unemployment and the overwhelming pollution in the area by relocating to better places in Sydney. Companies and manufacturing owners closed down their businesses or factories and also moved to other areas in Australia where they could set up again.
Around the 1990s the State Government set up the City West Development Corporation with the goal to renew and transform the area into an increased residential community and workforce. In 1991, the federal government also launched a Better Cities Program, which aimed to improve economic efficiency, social equity, and environmental sustainability of Australian cities, and included an urban renewal program of Pyrmont. More than $200 million dollars in government funds were invested in this project and urban renewal has certainly been effective.
Pollution
Factories and warehouses that were being built released large amounts of smoke into the air and also polluted the water in the Pyrmont-Ultimo area. Noise pollution was constant as factories and industries were often loud with the use of large machinery.
From World War II until the 1960s, wool stores on the peninsula employed thousands of men. With oil soaked into thousands of feet of wood, fires were a constant hazard. In 1935 the Goldsbrough and Mort store went up in a blaze lasting two weeks, filling the suburb with the smell of burning wool and grease.
The impact of the urban growth and decline in this area led to many other physical and human issues such as over population, unemployment, high traffic and pollution including noise, land, air, water and thermal pollution.
Unemployment
During the 1950s, new power sources became available. The completion of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric scheme meant that the polluting, coal-fired power stations of Pyrmont and Ultimo eventually closed and gave way to the ‘cleaner’ hydro-electricity. With an increasing number of productions closing or relocating to other parts of the level of unemployment within Pyrmont-Ultimo also rapidly increased. Some workers relocated due to lack of work within the area and left a much smaller population.
The Pyrmont-Ultimo area has gone through significant changes through time. Before urban decline occurred, urban growth happened and the Pyrmont area emerged as a manufacturing site. In 1826 the Pyrmont-Ultimo area became one of the busiest seaports in Australia and so more industries and factories were being built there, which meant a larger population. By 1900 the population of the area had escalated to 19,000 people from just approximately 5000 people. After reaching its peak in these years, by the 1950s the Pyrmont-Ultimo area had fallen into decline. Many large industries closed or moved to newer areas because it was just too polluted and dirty as the area became an entry port for post-war migrants. The area was left with abandoned and warehouses and factories that looked run downed and deserted. In 1981 population hit its lowest point in Pyrmont-Ultimo, only 1590 people lived in the area.
However the renewal of the area has turned Pyrmont-Ultimo into one of the most successful and thriving communities and is home to many big media and technology companies.

1900s, at its peak, thousands of people came in seeking for jobs and streets were full of industries and houses.
Urban renewal, after urban growth and decline had occurred urban renewal transformed the area into a better place.
Urban processes have many negative but also positive effects on different Australian environments.
Urban decline and urban growth are cases of urban processes that have had both positive and negative impacts on different areas of Australia, for example Pyrmont and Ultimo.
What is urban growth & decline?
Urban Growth: The increasing size of a city in or area because of either increased population growth or increased area through new suburbs.
Urban Decline: Changes in the way an area is used because of relocation of different activities and leaving factories and warehouses abandoned and deserted.
