Governor / Senator of Wisconsin (1901-1925)

  • The Wisconsin Idea
  • Primary elections
  • Workers Compensation
  • State regulation/taxation of railroads
  • Direct election of senators
  • Progressive taxation
  • minimum wage/other labor reforms
  • women's suffrage (his wife, Belle Case, influenced him greatly and was a fervent feminist herself)
  • antitrust/corporation regulation reforms
  • was called unpatriotic by critics when he opposed the idea of the U.S. going to war during World War I
  • ran for the Progressive party in the election of 1924 and lost
  • was seen as a traitor to his homestate of Wisconsin
  • many alliances he made were threatened when he announced his opposition to the war
  • the platform of his ideas threatened the order of the country because they involved a government takeover of the railroads, getting rid of private utilities, and outlawing child labor and more importantly, the end of imperialism in Latin America
  • this fear is seen as the reason he lost the election in 1924
