The scorpion was the symbol that El Patron chose to represent the family of the Alacrans, but it also represents their personalities and attitudes. I think that all through-out the book this symbol represented the greed and dishonesty of the whole family, and played a part in the plot, when Maria and Matt use the passage marked with the red scorpion to try to escape.

The House of the Scorpion

Irony

Quotes:

"That's disgusting. Clones aren't people," cried Emilia" (p. 26)

IRONY

"I forgot. You're too dumb to talk. You're a stupid clone..." (p. 45)

Everyone treats Matt differently because he's a clone, when really he's exactly the same as the rest of them. I think that this ties in with the theme of not judging people, because you see the effects of everyone judging Matt.

"Maria raised her head. "Matt's human?" "He always was," her mother replied" (p. 367)

Symbol

QUOTES:

Foreshadowing

"It was a different color, though, and it wasn't a star. "It's a scorpion!" he cried. "The mark of the Alacrans," (p.221)

Quote:

"Lights outlined the white walls of a vast house above, with pillars and statues and doorways going who knows where. In the center of an arch was the carved outline of a scorpion." (p. 21)

"Tam Lin was stirred when she'd mentioned milkweed. "It's fed upon by monarch butterflies," he'd said. "They're clever little buggers. Fill themselves up with poison so nothing will eat them." (p.235)

I saw foreshadowing in the novel when at Matt's coming of age party, Tam Lin said something to Cecilia about Monarch butterflies eating poisonous plants so that nothing else would eat them. This was foreshadowing the part of novel where Cecilia tells El Patron and the doctors about how she had been feeding Matt arsenic so that his heart would become weaker. I think that this supports the rising action of the plot, because it changes the way we see Matt's future.

Character vs. Society

QUOTES:

"The boys drew away from Matt as though he were something unclean."

Matt has deal with everyone treating him horribly after they find out that he is a clone. I think that this goes with the novel's theme of not judging people, because it shows how hard it is on Matt when he is constantly being judged.

Before:

"One of them, a severe-looking female with deep creases down either side of her mouth, carried Matt as the others went ahead to open the doors." (p. 21)

After:

"You idiot! You need a vet for this little beast!" the man roared. "How dare you defile this house?" "He was bleeding-" began Steven."Yes! All over the sheet! We'll have to burn it now. Take the creature outside now." (p.23)

Theme:

I thought that the theme of this book was to not judge people by how they seem on the outside.
