Wrath of the Coaches

Woody vs Bo Era

“A conference championship, Rose Bowl appearance, and possible national championship was on the line in this monumental game, part of the hotly contested stretch of the rivalry known as The Ten Year War.” This quote explains how costly the game was for both of the football schools. The game was one of the biggest of them all.

Michigan was upset not even going to any of the top 11 bowl games, and new they needed to try even harder next year. After that year, every year from then on until Woody Hayes retired, Ohio State would tie for 1st place in the big 10, or the loser of the game between the two would get 2nd place in the Big 10. That was when the two teams would fight their hardest at the game between Michigan and Ohio State.

The fifth game was a hard fought game in Ann Arbor, MIchigan at Michigan Stadium (Michigan's home field). The winner of this game would go to the Rose Bowl Game or even the National Championship Game. Each side of the teams knew they needed to win the fifth meeting between Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes. The winner would be rewarded a rose to the rose bowl game… If there was a winner at least.

Rivalry Begun

“There was plenty to criticize about Woody Hayes. His methods were tough, his temper was, at times, unforgivable. And, unless you knew him or played for him, it is hard to explain why you liked being around the guy. But you didn't just like it, you loved it. He was simply fascinating." Bo Schembechler quoted

"If 'Bo' is not a winner, I never saw one and I should know. He beat me the last three games we played. We've fought and quarreled for years but we're great friends." [Quoted in The Lantern February 10, 1986.] Woody Hayes quoted. The two coaches admired each other just did not like each other on the football field

The Ending of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler

Sadly both of the coaches are dead now. Woody Hayes coached until 1978 when he punched a Clemson Linebacker and was fired from the team the very next day. Woody only had nine more years left in him as he died March 12, 1987. His career record against Michigan football was: 16-11-1 (He won 16, lost eleven, and tied one)

Woody Hayes died November 17, 2006. He retired after their Rose Bowl game against USC. His age caught up with him and he retired 1989. He still had many years to live, but he underwent heart surgery twice.

Both of them are still remembered today and college football is not the same without them.

Michigan was super upset about how they did not get to play in a bigger bowl game and Ohio State did. Michigan believed they were a better team and deserved it over Ohio State. Bo Schembechler was not a fan of how Michigan did not play in a big game either. This lead to a Michigan RAGE!!

Battle field

These two quotes explain how the two coaches were friends off the field but on the football field, there was hatred between the two. The two coaches inspired both schools to get in fights and hated the opposite school. Bo and Woody caused the whole country to change the perspective of college football.

Woody Hayes was really getting annoyed with all of the Michigan fans and refused to call Michigan by their real name. Instead he called Michigan, The Team Up North. One time Ohio State beat Michigan and got a ring for it and he refused to have Michigan or it so he made the people who made the ring put OSU: 26 TUP:21.

That also got all the Michigan fans mad which made the fans argue and fight even more of a rival.

Once upon a time, there were two coaches who hated each other. Their names were Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler. The two coaches coached football at The Ohio State University (Woody Hayes), and at the University of Michigan (Bo Schembechler). Considered by some, Woody and Bo basically created the biggest rivalry in sports… The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan. From 1968 until present day 2015, the rivalry has taken place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Columbus, Ohio. Bo Schembechler went to Ohio State University for his college career and even coached there until he decided to take his chances and went to go coach at University of Michigan Football. When Woody Hayes went to college at The Ohio State University and coached there after two other smaller schools. Woody and Bo´s rivalry is up next.

Beginning of a Rivalry

The beginning of the rivalry started with one intense game in 1968. It was Bo Schembechler's first career game against the great Ohio State football coach: Woody Hayes. It was a close game throughout the game but Michigan and there new coach Bo Schembechler won it 24-12 at Ann Arbor at Michigan Stadium. From then on Woody Hayes knew he had a new challenge to face… Bo Schembechler. Since then the games were always a hard fought hard hitting game.

The very next game, Ohio State won the game in their home stadium Ohio Stadium. The next two games were shootouts and Michigan won at their home stadium and Ohio State won at their home stadium. It came down to the 5th game between the two teams that was one of the most hard fought games between the two coaches in American History.

The end of the game, both sides were shocked of how the game turned out... Ties of 10s. 1973 was the greatest year of the rivalry because the tie would mean a tough debate of who would go to the Rose Bowl or even the National Championship game in New Orleans. Michigan thought they deserved to go to the Rose Bowl game, Woody Hayes even agreed that they did not deserve to go, but Ohio State would end up going to the Rose Bowl game and defeating the University of Southern California Trojans 42-21
