The above political cartoon about African American civil rights is titled Forcing Slavery Down the Throat of a Freesoiler. It was created by an unknown artist in 1856. In this cartoon a slave is being shoved down the throat of a free soiler. James Buchanan and the guy in the black suit are holding down the free soiler while Stephen A. Douglas and Franklin Pierce are shoving an African American slave into the free soiler's throat. The African American slave is shouting "Murder!!! help - neighbor help, O my poor wife and children!" This cartoon was drawn after the Kansas-Nebraska act was passed by Stephen A. Douglas in 1854. There is not any symbolism in this cartoon, but there is a message to be conveyed. The message that can be conveyed from this political cartoon is that Democrats used to enforce slavery. This cartoon effectively conveys the message of slavery because it shows that slavery was enforced, that not everyone likes slavery, and that Democrats helped enforced slavery.

This political cartoon is titled "The Union as it Was" and was created in 1874 by an unknown artist. This political cartoon conveys a very strong message using symbolism, different words, and the picture drawn. Two men are shaking hands above a banner with African American's on it. The man on the left is holding a rifle and his suit jacket reads "White League". The man on the right is dressed in completely white and we can see him smiling as he shakes hands and is holding a gun. On this man's belt is another gun anlong with a knife. This man's robe smimply reads "K.K". On the top of the banner is a skull and cross bones, which symbolizes death. The banner also reads "Worse then slavery". This cartoon was made after the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed, which gave African American's civil rights. The message to be recieved from this cartoon is that after the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed that white people were not happy with losing their free-working slaves, and did whatever they could in their power to prohibit African American's from recieveing their equal rights. The artist that made this cartoon did a very well job in making the message effecitve. This cartoon easily shows how African American's were treated after they recieved their civil rights, and how the effects of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments started to change America.
