In 1840-1880 the only people who were allowed to go to school were the rich white boys. They were taught Greek, Latin, English grammar, advanced maths, geography, literature, and science in preparation for university. If girls received an education it was through a tutor at home or a school that was designed for girls. African Americans went to separate schools that received less funding. African American teachers could teach in African American schools and received a lower pay.
This book had a great influence upon literary taste in the United States more than any other book, including the bible. They advocated the establishment of free libraries. There were 6 readers with different lessons. The McGuffey Readers taught moral lesson, reading, spelling biology,speech, history, botany, literature, and other subjects.
The normal schools crusade advocated teaching as a profession. The first state-sponsored normal school was established in Lexington, Massachusetts in 1839. Normal school were established to train teachers. Then the teachers had to take a test to see if they were educated. The impact of normal schools was enormus.

Horace Mann served as the first secretary of the state board of education in Massachusetts. He believed in free, public education for every boy and girl. He began using taxes to fund schools. "The Father of the Common School Movement".
The Morill Act was first introduced in 1857 in response to a political movement. College in the 19th century traditionally taught classical studies and the general sciences rather than practical or appiled fields of intrest. The Morill Act was passed by congress in 1859, but President James Buchanan vetoed it.
Horace Mann proposed a system of free universal and non-sectarian schooling. Each district would provide a school for all children regardless of religious or social class. Private schools had to pay tuition and new schools were funded by taxes and special fees by parents.
