I died for beauty- but was scarce

Second Romantic Example

First Non- Romantic Example

"I died for Beauty- but was scarce / Adjusted in the Tomb" (lines 1-2)

Goes against the Transcendentalist tenet:

"Every human being is capable of transcending

"I died for Beauty- but was scarce" (line 1)

"And I- for Truth- Themself are One" (line 7)

  • Transcendentalists believed that all humans have the ability to transcend to a greater place, meaning heaven. This quote explains that the narrator was present underground, rather than in heaven. In a Romantic poem, the narrator would've set this poem up above, rarther than down under.

Romantic Tenet:

champions the individual

  • They poem portrays how single people believe in something so strongly that they died for it. Emily Dickinson seems to praise/emphasize the narrator's ability to stand up for a cause

First Romantic Example

"Until the Moss had reached our lips- / And covered up-our names-" (lines 1-12)

Romantic Tenet:

views life as transient

  • this poem describes two people who say they died for an important cause, so it is safe to assume that they were important people. However, this poem still illustrates that their names are covered up, and they are basically forgotten. Romantics believed that life was transient, and no life, or life's legacy, lives lasts forever. These two people in the poem are examples of those who have finally been forgotten.

a poem by Emily Dickinson

Second Non- Romantic Example

"I died for Beauty- but was scarce"

Goes against the tenet:

champions the individual

  • Obviously this is very contradictory to my second slide, but not only does this poem portray two people fighting for things they believe in, but they also failed. As the title states, she narrator died for beauty, but was scarce, meaning he/she failed to accomplish his/her goal. In a Romantic poem, not only would there be amazing people fighting for amazing things, but they would accomplish their goal, and they would win their battles
