- 1992 - AAP recomends supine sleeping position for infants. 30-40% reduction in SIDS
- 1891 - Portable incubator. Rotch believed too many babies were shown up missing that were born before 7 month. He wanted to build a portable incubator that had none of the disadavntages as the old one
- 1902 - First surgical repair of congenital diaphragamatic hernia. CDH is where a hole is in the diahpram that allows the abdominal organs to move into the chest
- 1847 - First use of either ether anesthesia in obstetrics
- 1851 - First report of average feedings for infants. New borns average per feeding will be from 2-3 ounces and will eat to every 3 to 4 hours
History of Neonatal Nursing
- 1733 - First report of duodenal atresa. It is the congenital absence of complete closure of a portion of the lumen. It causes increased levels of anatomic fluid during pregnancy and intestinal obstruction in newborn babies
- 1753 - First correct avg. of birth weight and length, which is 7.5lbs/ 45.7cm
- 1780 - First use of oxygen in newborns. Premature babies needed oxygen because they cant breath on their own because their lungs are not strong enough yet.
- 1834 - First description of enotracheal intubation for newborn recitation
- 98-138AD - Greek physician wrote about newborn care and midwifery
- 1650 - Invention of the obstetric forceps. These were used for delivery by applying traction to the fetal head
- 1983 - Certification for neonatal nurse practionars begin.
- 1987- Neonatal rescitation training program launched by AHA
- 1912 - Created a device to make it easier to collect infants blood. Infants veins are too small to find.
