Analyzing the Poem

  • "Mother of Exiles" - Metaphore: refers to her as he motherly figure of America, taking in people and proecting hem and nurturing them.
  • "From her beacon-hand glows a world-wide welcome"- Hyperbole: the glow from the tourch can't be seen world-wide, however it is used to signify how everbody world-wide knows that America is known for freedom.
  • "Her mild eyes command"- Paradox: "command" to show the boldness of the statue but drawn back to her nurturing state by the usage of "mild" while describing her eyes.

Lazarus was one of the first successful female Jewish writers of her time. She was in the literary elite and was recognized for being an important poet back in the late nineteenth century.
