5 Questioning Techniques

Technique #1

Two Branches of Questions:

  • 2 Branches: Open and Closed
  • Detective Funneling
  • Leading
  • Snooping
  • Child's Play

Warning:

Open questions seek to draw out longer answers. Give enough time for a proper responce to be formulated and inner courage to be bolstered sufficient to speak ones mind.

Avoid interpreting a pause as, "I don't have a comment." thus plowing on with the conversation under false impressions or understandings.

Starting a

Conversation

What do you have planned for this weekend?

Open

questions

seek longer answers.

They are good for:

Questions

Gathering Opinions

How do you feel about

the policy changes?

Seeking More Detail

What else do we need

to make this a success?

Mastery of Questions

  • should be a conscious habit of effective people.

Closed

questions

seek short answers.

They are good for:

Warning:

A misplaced closed question, can stall a fluid conversation and lead to awkward silence. Therefore, avoid closed questions when a conversation is in full motion.

Testing Commitment

So, if I obtain this specific certification, I will get a raise?

Setting the

Framework

Are you happy with the service you are getting from your phone company?

Concluding or

Decision Making

Knowing the facts, are we agreed this is the right course of action?

Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.

Albert Einstein

Technique #2

My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.

Stephen Hawking

"Were any of them wearing

distinctive clothing?"

"Yes, several of them had

baseball caps on."

Some

"Please, can you tell me more about the caps?"

"Now that you mention it, the caps were all blue, and had a large, white letter - Y."

A Skills Review for
