Clinical Example: A 64 year old male patient was admitted with pneumonia 2 weeks ago, and is being discharged tomorrow after completing antibiotic therapy. This morning, he rings the nurse and requests a bed bath. This patient has no comorbidities and is able to provide his own care.

Question: Keeping in mind the Theory of Self-care, how would you help this patient?

  • Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland in 1914
  • 1934 – Diploma from school of Nursing.
  • 1939 – Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • 1945 - Master of Science in Nursing Education.
  • Primary focus: teaching, research, and administration.
  • Served as: a director of nursing, a biology and nursing instructor, an associate professor and as the Dean of the school of nursing.
  • 1959: developed the Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing.
  • 1971: published Nursing: Concepts of Practice, outlines her theory of nursing.
  • Held numerous conferences and workshops around the world.
