Laurent Clerc
- born in Philadelphia on December 10, 1787
- attended Yale at age of 15 and graduated in 1805, a short time before turning 18
- went for law degree, but only was in the business for a while before taking up odd jobs
- door-to-door salesman in rural Kentucky and Ohio
-> led to Gallaudet teaching children history, the bible, and geography
- went back to school and graduated from Andover Theological Seminary in 1812 as a liscensed preacher
-> travel preacher due to health problems.
- 1821: Gallaudet married former student Sophia Fowler in August
- had 8 children
- Edward founded 1st college for the deaf in 1864 - Gallaudet University
- stopped working at the school in 1831 and took on 2 jobs as a minister at local jail and retreat for the insane
- 1851: died in September due to complications of his lung cancer
Sophia Fowler
- statue of him and Alice Cogswell in front of Gallaudet University
- put on a 20 cent postage stamp in June 1983
- received honorary Doc. of Law degree form Western Reserve College
