Robber Barons vs. Capitans of Industry: The Business Leaders of the Late 1800s.

Andrew Carnegie

Understanding

Positive political cartoon of Andrew Carnegie

  • He built over 2,000 public libraries across the U.S.
  • He improved the steel industry and the refinement of steel, using the Bessemer process, making steel cheaper and faster to produce.
  • Funded public universities and schools, making education more accessible.

To understand how Americans of the late 1800s saw big business leaders, we have to look at both the good and the bad that they did. We will look at Andrew Carnegie, one of the wealthiest tycoons from this era.

The Other Side of the Coin

Andrew Carnegie

The most well known controversy in Carnegie's business career would be his actions which led up to the Homestead Strike. His hiring of Henry Frick and his refusal to negotiate with the labor unions led to the death of ten workers and the injury of hundreds.

Conclusion?

The terms "Robber Barons" and "Captains of Industry" are subjective to the opinions of the public and to how many facts you have on the men you are applying the terms to. Andrew Carnegie helped thousands of people with his philanthropic donations and deeds. Is that enough to make up for the Homestead Strike? Are the events of the Homestead Strike enough to erase his many years of charity work?
