Ancient Egptian Religion

  • The Egyptian religion was a polytheistic(many gods) religion; and at one pont a monotheistic religion. They had about 700 different gods and goddesses. Trying to make things easier, they organized them into groups of 8 to 9.

Household & National Gods

  • Were the main deity in certain places in Egypt.
  • Some were able to gain recognition and actually be worshipped.
  • Sometimes gods were combined with each other to create a new deity to be worshipped.
  • Household gods were worshipped at shrines in a person's home. Two household gods are Bes & Tauert.
  • National gods were promoted by a reigning pharaoh, and their preference.

The Igbo

  • The exclusive culture of the ancient Egyptians succeeded between 5500 BCE and 30 BCE. Their history covers up to 5,000 years of civilization. They also have a range of dialects spoken, which are categorized.
  • The Igbo are the second largest group in southern Nigeria. They are both culturally and socially diverse, and have many different groups. They have a wide range of dialect, however, they all speak one language.
  • The Igbo believe that there is a supreme God that oversees everything. He is called Chukwu Abiama, which means the creator of everything. Sacrifices, however, are made to the minor gods and not the supreme God.

Ala ( earth goddess)

  • Ala is known to be associated with fertility or humans & the land.

Anyanwu ( sun god)

  • She is believed to be in control of tree and crop growth.

Igwe ( sky God)

  • Igwe is believed to be in control of providing rain for the land.
