RSOP Meaning
Reconaissance Selection, and Occupation of a Position
To brake it down easily RSOP is reconing an area and ensuring that your battery can occupy and fire from said point quickly, efficiently, and safely
Different Ways to Recon an Area
Advanced Party Mission
Map Recon- All reconnaissance begins with a map inspection. Potential positions and routes to the new position can be chosen. This method is very fast and allows unsuitable routes to be eliminated. However old routes and some old bridges, just for example, may no longer be there.
Air Recon- This condition is not often used because Battery Commanders don't always have access to required personel and equipment. This is a fast method but, route conditions are not always distinguishable in this method which means some routes may be compramised
Ground Recon- This is the best form of recon. The suitability of routes can be physically examined, and terrain may be verified that no enemy NBC has occured.
In an artillery battery we have to move frequently to survive and it is the job of a advanced party to scout out possible zones for a battery to occupy and fire. According to the 6-50 the BC or Platoon Leader will be in the advanced party.
Mounted Recon
Dismount Recon
You should use mounted recon when terrain is open and provides maximum visibility, time is limited, very detailed reconnaissance is not required, and enemy contact is not likely.
Some of the plus sides to mounted recon are speed, the use of the advance party vehicle depending on which type of vehicle is used, its easy to break contact and move on.
A con of mounted recon is loss of stealth.
Dismounted Recon should be used when detailed reconnaissance is required, maximum stealth is necessary, enemy contact is expected or likely, terrain is restrictive or is surrounded by wooded areas, time is not limited.
Pros of dismount recon it allows the advance party to obtain detailed information about the position area, less chance of enemy contact, and allows for maximum security of the advance party.
Cons of advanced party is that it may be time consuming, and it can be difficult to overwatch entire advance party with a crew-served weapon, as well as being removed from the support of there vehicle
Reconaissance by Fire
Determining if an Area is Suitable to Occupy
If threat of enemy attack is high the battery commander along with the advanced party must ensure position areas support maximum dispersion. The advanced party must ensure the position is not located on platoon-sized or larger areas of approach. They must perform a reconnaissance of possible observation points (OP) to provide early warning to execute hasty moves in case of attack. They must make a reconnaissance to determine if the position provides adequate cover for hiding and terrain masking.
This is a method to ensure the saftey of a possible firing point. Advance parties place direct fire on positions where there is a reasonable suspicion of enemy occupation. The goal is to cause the enemy to disclose his position by moveing or returning fire.
You will only use recon by fire if there is a bunker that may or may not be occupied, if there is an obvious enemy kill zone, or signs of recent enemy activity.
We may use this method because indirect fire is very difficult to coordinate and requires much more time to execute and control, but direct fire will disclose the advance party's location, but this method also requires a high degree of situational awareness to ensure that no friendly units are fired upon.
Deciding Advanced Party Members
The 3 Types of Positions
The BC or platoon leader must select primary, alternate, and supplementary positions.
The advanced party generally consists of BC or platoon leader, Gunery SGT, First SGT, Gunys driver, and a member of FDC
Primary Position- The firing point from which the battery will complete its main mission.
Alternative Position- The position in which the battery will move if the primary point is compromised to continue the mission. Since the unit will continue its mission from the alternate position, it must meet the same requirements as the primary position and should be far enough away to escape the effects of enemy indirect fire on the primary position.
Supplementary position- Selected for accomplishment of a specific mission, such as defense of the primary position. Supplementary position for defense should be selected to cover likely enemy areas of approach.
Position for the CAT While Occupying
Formations for Occupying a Position
The CAT will generally be positioned in some fashion behind the gun to cover its rear flank and ensure easy transportation of rounds from the gun to the CAT
These are a couple different types of formations for gun batterys, notice how they can always pull 360 security.
