Where is Washington DC?

Washington DC is the capital of the USA and is located on the middle of the east coast surrounded by the states of Maryland to the northeast and Virginia to the southwest.

Northwest Corner

Southeast Corner

The northwest quadrant is the largest out of the four and contains the Central Business District, the Federal Triangle, and the museums which are on the northern side of the National Mall. This quadrant also contains the Verizon Center which is where many sports games, concerts, and other events take place. This quadrant is also the most cosmopolitan out of all of DC.

The southeast quadrant is mostly metropolitan and contains the Anacostia Museum and the Smithsonian Institution. This quadrant however, is very infamous for its growing crime rate and the vandalism of most public spaces such as the metro, the bus system, etc. Being a majorly African-American neighborhood, there are lots of weekly jazz concerts in the summer and a big celebration and parade on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Plan of Washington DC

Washington DC was split into four different corners

-Northwest

-Northeast

-Southwest

-Southeast

Washington DC

Washington DC is home to approximately 646,000 people. Its main industries are the federal government and tourism. The city was divided into four quadrants: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. The Capitol Building marks the center of the city and is where the 4 quadrants meet.

Southwest Corner

Fun Facts

The southwest quadrant is the smallest of the others yet the most important. This quadrant is responsible for most of the water supply to the city because a large part of the Potomac River flows through it. It is also famous for its hotels which were built on the riverfront to attract tourists and it also contains the satellite offices for the United States Environment Protection Agency.

  • Buildings in Washington DC are not allowed to be planned to be constructed taller than the Washington Monument

  • The Capitol Building is the tallest masonry dome in the Western Hemisphere and 4th tallest in the world
  • A french architect Charles L'Enfant helped design and plan some of the city back in the 1700s

The City Metro

The Metro is a well planned, efficent, and rapid transit system used by the public in Washington DC. There are currently five lines:

Red Line

Blue Line

Green Line

Yellow Line

Orange Line

The Purple Line was recently proposed and the Silver line is currently under construction. The metro system of Washington DC is underground in the central part of the city and above ground in the suburban areas. L'Enfant Plaza is the busiest station and has all the five lines under use going through it. The timings of the trains are not always the same so timers for each train are presented on screens in most stations for accuracy.

Northeast Corner

The northeast quadrant has a majorly catholic population and contains religious universities such as The Catholic University of America and Trinity Washington University. Gallaudet University is another catholic university which helps the deaf and hard of hearing in another one of the local neighborhoods. In fact, one neighborhood within the area is called the "Little Vatican". This quadrant also contains the United States National Arboretum and the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens located just south of the Anacostia River.
