Carriers of culture

Cultural Differences

Cultural Experience

Drawing Conclusions

Drawing conclusions about a person based on their external appearance can be detrimental.

Carriers of culture include families, religious organizations, peer groups, neighbors, social groups, and professional

organizations.

Some cultural experiences are related to biological factors, such as physical stature and skin color, while others are related more to sociological factors, such as socioeconomic status and religious affiliation.

Culture is the knowledge, experience, values, ideas, attitudes, skills, tastes, and techniques that are passed on from more experienced members of a community to new members.

Descriptive Classifiers (DCL)

Some people are sensitive

• DCL-B (or bent B) "extremely tall" [hold the "bent 'B' hand" high in the air while using an appropriate facial expression."]

• DCL-bent-B "short"

• DCL-4 "long hair"

• DCL-1 "bulletin board"

DCL-1 "black board"

• DCL-4 (claw) "freckles"

• DCL-4 "striped"

• DCL-G "thin"

• DCL-4 (claw) "curly hair"

Descriptive Classifiers (DCL), are also known as size and shape specifiers, (SASSes). They describe a person or object.

In some cultures, people are sensitive about describing physical appearances.

ASL is a very visual language so it’s acceptable to describe someone's appearance.

Describing Height

In ASL you can also describe:

  • Body Types

Use eye gaze to show height in relation to yourself. If you don’t use eye gaze that refers to a persons actual height, not comparing to yourself.

DCL hand stays in the same position relative to your own height.
