HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee)

  • Strongly believed that communists had infiltrated many ways of the American life including the government and the entertainment industry
  • Ultimately was disbanded in 1975
  • HUAC formed in 1938, May 26th
  • Created to investigate disloyalty and espionage in the states, specifically communism.
  • Prominent members of the committee included Richard Nixon and Joseph McCarthy

Hollywood Blacklist

  • Practice of denying employment to screen writers, actors, and any other jobs related to the entertainment industry
  • People who were members or suspected of being part of the American Communist Party were blocked from work
  • lasted from 1947 - 1960
