Sentences should: enhance the topic
or main idea, match the mood of the writing, vary in length and structure,
have purposeful and varied beginnings.
Sentences should flow together. Transitions and connections between sentences show how they relate to and build upon each other.
Sentence Fluency depends upon the
words that the author chooses.
Before writing begins, think about how writing should be structured. Is there an appropriate
pattern that should be used?
Choose an "attention grabber" introduction.
Use transitions within your writing that connect
ideas together.
Use details where they are appropriate and needed.
Sequencing must be logical in order for
it to be effective.
Organization is in the background.
The conclusion leaves the reader with
resolution.
Writing is oriented left to right and up to down.
Spacing between words is adequate.
Punctuation is accurate and appropriate
for the grade level.
Capitalization is consistent
throughout the writing.
Proper use of grammar that
helps to clarify the piece.
Appropriate use of paragraphing
within the writing.
Indentation is used correctly.
The use of conventions adds
style to the writing.
Spelling is generally correct.

The words are specific so that the reader understands what the writer means.
Words and phrases are used to maintain readers' attention. The reader is excited to read on.
The language in the writing is appropriate and effective for the meaning to be conveyed.

as well as any style choices
made in your writing.
The selection of words
should include new words, action words, descriptors, difficult words, and words
that help the reader see, feel hear, taste, or understand.
Repetition of words is
avoided at both the beginning of sentences and within the writing piece. Choosing a variety of words makes reading more enjoyable.
