Step 3: Write!

Use your evidence

Step 4: Provide a counterclaim & rebuttal

  • Remember, your claim is your stance on the issue. What point do you want to make?
  • Evidence are the facts or ideas that support the claim.
  • You need to set up or introduce your evidence -- what is it?
  • Finally, provide reasoning for your evidence -- how or why does it support your claim?
  • A counterclaim is a statement opposing the original claim. What does the other side think?
  • A rebuttal disproves the validity of the counterclaim. Why is the other side wrong?

Step 1: Choose a topic

The Argument Clinic

Step 2: Research!

  • Research your topic!
  • You must have AT LEAST 4 sources of evidence and USE them all in your writing. One of your sources must be The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
  • Your sources must be credible (i.e. not Wikipedia, blogs, opinion pieces). Not sure if a source is credible? ASK!
  • You should choose a topic from the Huck Finn Argumentation Topics. If you have an alternate idea for a topic, then you must seek teacher approval.
  • Decide what your stance/opinion on the issue is so that you can begin building your argument!
