Safe At Home, By: Mike Lupica

Rising Action

Climax

Nick goes to his first baseball practice for the varsity team. Nick is throwing the ball over the infielders heads and letting everyone steal on him. Over the next three practise's Nick is doing worse. The coach keeps him after the practice to talk to him. After this practice he goes home. At dinner the family tells him he has to improve his grades because he doesn't take time on his work. Nick would rather read his comic books.

His dad tells him if they don't improve he wont be able to play summer baseball.

Nick tells Gracie about how bad he is doing at baseball. Gracie then gives Nick a lecture about how he should stop crying about how bad he is doing and start being the son that Nicks parents have always wanted. So, Nick gets one of his favorite dads favorite books. Nick then realizes how much alike it is to his comic books. His dad is impressed with how much he likes it. Later that night Nick goes out to his garage and his dad is standing there with a baseball glove. Mr. Crandall tries to play catch with Nick

Mrs. Crandall

Mr. Crandall is a College English Teacher.

He doesn't get along with Nick that well because Nick is into sports.

Mrs. Crandall is a college math teacher.

She urges Nick to do good in school.

In the beginning of the book Luke is on the Junior Varsity Field outside their school for baseball. Nick is a catcher. The Varsity coach is pitching to the batters and Nick is catching. He hadn't let anyone steal on him this whole practice. The Varsity coach then comes walking down the field and says to Nick "Do you want to be the new varsity catcher." Nick is so surprised he says yes to the offer he then learns that the Varsity catcher Bobbie broke his wrist and won't return. When he comes home he runs to Gracie's house to tell her about the news. Gracie says it is great.

Falling Action

Main Characters

Nick has his first game.

Nick throws the ball to second trying to pick out a stealing base runner.

Then he had his second game.

It went worse then the first because he was throwing it into the outfield but he was throwing little dribblers.

Yet Nicks team starts the season 3-0 now they have to face their rival the Kings. They haven't beet the Kings for many years.

Nick Crandall, Gracie Wright, and Mrs and Mr Crandall.

Nick

Nick is a catcher for his school team. He is adopted by the Crandall's. Nicks best friend is Gracie his neighbor. He lives in Connecticut. He also loves to read comic books.

Resolution

Setting

The game started, soon it was 2-2. Then 4-3. Nicks team up.

Gary the pitcher was trying to hard to throw a perfect pitch and strike ever guy out. But he let up 3 walks. Bases loaded and Gary pitches the ball with Zian Diez up the best hitter on the Kings. Gary pitches the ball in the count at 2 and o. Gary hits the outside corner and the ump calls it a ball so it is 3-0 for the count. So, Nick holds the ball looking at the outfield the base runner at second was leading way off so Nick took a shot and he got him out. Final 4-3 Nicks team wins.

The setting is mostly at school but sometimes at Nicks or Gracie's house.

Gracie

Gracie is Nicks neighbor that lives across the street. Gracie is very smart. She plays lacrosse.
