Working hours and condition:

On a mission you would work to a set schedule. This would tell you what time to wake up, go to sleep and the tasks you would carry out each day. You could be away from home for extended periods of time, for example you would spend around six months on board the ISS.

An astronaut or cosmonaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft.

HOW MUCH DO THEY EARN?

Basic requirements:

  • As a new recruit your starting salary could be around £39,000 a year.
  • Following your basic training this could rise to £58,000 a year.
  • After your first spaceflight your salary may rise to £67,000 a year or more.

1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics.

2. At least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.

3. Ability to pass a NASA space physical specific standards:

  • Distant visual acuity: 20/100 or better uncorrected, correctable to 20/20 each eye.
  • Blood pressure: 140/90 measured in a sitting position.
  • Height between 62 and 75 inches.
