Belize

The Garifuna

November 1997

->The Garifuna are a black Caribbean culture located throughout Central America.

->Garifuna ancestors were enslaved Africans that were brought to the Caribbean’s by the Spanish.

->Present day Garifuna are seen throughout Central American countries such as Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.

-> The Garifuna obtained a diverse culture that incorporates African traditions of music, dance, religious rites, and ceremonies

->The Garifuna culture is mostly influenced by African culture. The origins of Africans and Garifunas ancestors are the same and the music is very similar and heavily African influenced.

Guatemala

Honduras

  • Guatemala is a nation where mostly everyone came from native heritage
  • Their culture is similar to the African culture because they value their tradition
  • For example, the Guatemalan flag has symbols that represent the native culture
  • It has a exotic bird and plants that have been around since the time of the Mayans
  • The family children are also everyone's children like in the African culture and they are all taken care of by the older women

->African culture in Honduras dates back to the 16th century.

->African migrants as well as the indigenous and the nearby Caribbean influence, the Afro-Honduran people known as Garifuna or Black Caribs.

African heritage is seen in:

> locking of the hair

>mixed languages

>the masked dances

>colorful and flowing clothing

>ancestral drumming

>creation of natural musical instruments

>respect for the land and the solidarity among one other.

El Salvador

  • 94% of the population is considered mestizo
  • Only place that does not have a Garifuna
  • there are African origins in El Salvador but they are hard to trace back
  • El Salvador's main musical instrument, the marimba, can be traced to Africa and it was brought to Central America by African Slaves.
  • Every different song has traces of Native American, African, and European influences
  • The main songs that are most famous in El Salvador are the most Afro-Caribbean

Nicaragua

->The Garifuna's popular music is punta.

->Punta is danced throughout Central America

->This style of dancing can be linked with rituals and ancestor worship.

->Similar to an ancient rhythm called bunda, In Africa.

From Africa

Costa Rica

->Costa Rica's diverse ethnic heritage is reflected in its music, and an important part of the country's music scene is the influence of Afro-Caribbean rhythms.

->Many different African-influenced musical styles are played widely in the region, including calypso and reggae.

->One of the most important instruments is the marimba, a xylophone-like percussion instrument first crafted by African slaves who had been brought to Central America.

->Heavy use of banjos and drums.

  • Panama people are called Panamanians and they are also a people that are very tied down to their culture
  • This is a place where there is a woman president and women hold high positions
  • This is also a culture where in the women rely on themselves
  • For example, if a husband were to leave the mother with the children then all the women would be in what is called a matrilocal household
