A Little Taste of Sound
Beats
- Beats occur when two sources of sound interfere with each other and have different frequencies, which cause intensity changes
- The regularly spaced changes in intensity are the beats
- The beat frequency is the difference between the two wavelengths (frequencies)
Loudness
- Loudness is the intensity of sound waves in a specific area
- Decibels measure loudness
- Over 120 dB is the usual amount a person can stand before pain is experienced
What is Sound?
Works Cited
- Sound is the waves of vibration that stimulate the inside of our ears
- There are 3 aspects to every sound: Source, Energy Transference, and Detection
- When we hear a sound, it is our eardrums vibrating

What Can We Hear?
- The widest range for average hearing is between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz
- Anything over 20,000 Hz is defined as ultrasonic
- The audible range of hearing changes with age, as the eardrums grow and change
Frequency
Pitch
- Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz)
- Pitch is most closely related to frequency
- A Hertz is 1 cycle in 1 second
- Low frequencies have low pitch and vice versa
- Dogs can hear up to 50,000 Hz and bats can hear as many as 100,000 Hz
- Galileo discovered the relationship between the two concepts
