1946- Microwave oven

  • Invented by Percy Spencer in 1946
  • Who walked in front a radar set with active radiation
  • This lead to research and the creation of the Microwave Oven
  • This cooks by radiation

1890- Electric oven

Timeline of the oven

since the Industrial revolution

  • Once electricity was invented and used in homes, it was used in ovens
  • Thomas Ahearn, who was the owner of an early electric company, had manufactured an oven to prepare an entire meal with electricity

1834- Gas oven

  • These were first produced for sale by Englishman James Sharp
  • These are powered by gas
  • The main advantages being, that it was easy to control ovens, and that it required low maintenance

1704- Dutch Oven

1967- Electric convection oven

  • Abraham Darby (14/04/1668- 08/03/1717)
  • He did not invent the oven, but was the first person to develop it for sale
  • Main early sales were in Britain and to American colonies
  • The source of heat is fire
  • The Dutch oven has kept its name for over 300 years- since 1704
  • This was first used in 1967
  • It has a fan or fans with heating parts which circulate hot air around the food to cook it.
  • This oven cooked food at a faster pace and at a lower temperature than previous ovens.

This timeline is based on the development of the oven since the period of the Industrial Revolution, and is not accurate to the earliest ovens recorded.
