Advantages of Vaginal Contraceptive Foam
Advantages
- Easily available at a pharmacy without a prescription
- Only has to be used when it is needed and does not need to be taken daily like other methods of contraception (Birth control for example)
- Vaginal Contraceptive Foam is convenient to carry with you
- Inexpensive to purchase
Advantages
- Provides lubrication during intercourse
- The effectiveness can be increased drastically by using other methods of contraception like a condom
Effectiveness of Vaginal Contraceptive Foam
- The effectiveness of the contraceptive is dependent upon if it is used correctly each time a person engages in intercourse
- It has been proven to be between 74-94% effective
- Effectiveness can increase if it is used in conjunction with another method of contraception like a condom (Effectiveness raises to 98%)
Disadvantages to Vaginal Contraceptive Foam
Disadvantages
- If exposed to HIV, the vaginal contraceptive foam may make the user more prone to contract the virus
- This method of contraception does not protect people from sexually transmitted infections and STDs
- May have a bad taste if oral sex is performed on the woman
- Cannot be used if one of the two involved in intercourse is allergic to spermicide (a key ingredient in the contraceptive)
Disadvantages
- Should be used with another method of birth control like a condom to be more effective
- May cause burning or irritation in the vagina or penis and result in painful urination
