What is done to help the Species

Title- Rice Rat: Oryzomys palustris natator

Habitat loss is the main threat to the rice rat. Development in marsh habitats by the process called “dredge and fill” has caused extensive damage to the population (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service 1999). Rice rats are vulnerable to low genetic variability due to its limited population. As a species of the Florida Keys, rising sea level is a potential threat to the rice rat’s habitat because it would become inundated with water.

How can students help.

Range of the Rice rat:

Population

Ranging from coastal salt marshes to mountain streams and clearings. It is semi aquatic, spending much time in the water, and usually occurs in wetland habitats. south of the united states.

Students can't help a lot with these animals but what they can do is avoid them. Because maybe a kid will try to hurt it because it is a rat. Nobody wants a rat in there house or near them. The least you could do is not hurt it. It will just threatened them more.

This species is considered secure in its range (NatureServe). Reported densities range from about 4/ha in a Texas coastal prairie to >50/ha in the Florida Everglades. There isn't a specific number to the population.
