The student is working on using more common sense in regards to their choices in class.

Minimal Level

The assignment is incomplete. The student has used lines, some shapes, or has attempted patterns. There is little to no personal expression. Some color was used in the assignment. Responsibility by the student needs to be taken for the assignment. The student must share supplies in class and work towards putting his/her supplies away. The student must develop respect for themselves and/or others in the classroom. The student must remain on task without consistent re-direction. The student must develop common sense in regards to his/her choices.

No Understanding

The assignment remains incomplete or has yet to be started. The student has been absent and missed instruction. The student has been pulled from class by their teacher, parent, or administration.

Daily Lesson Plan

1. Understand and apply technique, process, and media

2. Apply line, color, value, space, shape, texture, and the principles of movement, unity, balance, emphasis, pattern, and space.

3. Create original work of art and communicate ideas and express creativity.

4. Look at how artists’ express themselves, thoughts/ideas.

5. Assess and critique one’s own art and the art of other artists. Use vocabulary and reflect on process.

6. Compare art and share ideas and images.

Objective/Learning target

Artists express ideas, feelings, beliefs, and values. Creating art involves artistic decision making. Students will experience an introduction to the elements and principles of art.

Research Based Strategies/Methods

Direct Teaching and Demonstration- The teacher will introduce the “zentangle” drawings and demonstrate how to create a “zentangle” drawing.

Connection to Prior Knowledge

Students will identify the zentangle with prior experiences if they have doodled or drawn randomly allowing creativity to take over.

Activity Expectations

Students are expected to express ideas and show creativity. Students will apply the elements and principles of design. Students will use materials, tools, and techniques with skill. Students will exhibit initiative, effort and responsibility. Students will demonstrate life skills by sharing supplies, putting supplies away. Students will cooperate to create a caring climate in the classroom. Students will persevere, use common sense, and show respect for themselves and others.

Materials/Equipment

Students will use handouts created by Mrs. Koehler. Students will view a Smart Board presentation created by Mrs. Koehler. Students will view visual representations of “zentangle” designs. Students will use white paper, markers, color pencils, and possibly crayons or watercolors.

Essential Question

What media choices do artists have? How do artists best decide which media will best communicate their ideas?

Formative Assessment

The teacher will facilitate the room and check for understanding by viewing student work, asking questions, and checking for understanding.

Pre and Post assessment

Rubric

Self assessment and reflection

Data will be collected on the students knowledge of the elements of art. A pre-assessment and post assessment will be given to determine what the students know and what content they retain regarding the elements of art. This is an introduction lesson and students will be assessed over the principles of art with another unit.

The students will be given a simple assessment where they will be asked to demonstrate knowledge of the elements of art.

Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing.

Self-Assessment

Reflection Questions

What issues did you experience while creating this project? (No problems? What were your successes?)

Describe what did you found enjoyable about this project? (OR what did you least enjoy about it?)

As you look at this project, what would you like to improve on? (Nothing? What are your ideas for another?)

CAT

Name: Section

Use color pencils and your #2 pencil to demonstrate your knowledge of the Elements of Art. Create your answer/composition in each block using the element in bold type.

Line

Texture

I would have liked to have seen some color or design around the beetle. A black background would have been better.

Draw three different kinds of line.

Draw one simulated texture. What is texture?

Space

Value

Show a gradation of at least five different values.

Demonstrate your knowledge of positive and negative space. What is positive space?

Shape

Form

Illustrate 2 forms. How does form differ from shape?

Draw and label geometric and organic shapes. What are organic shapes?

Secondary Colors

Primary Colors

Other Options

Color brings a whole new dynamic to the artwork and the expression!

What are the primary colors? What are the secondary colors?

Explain this to me.......

Why do people love it so much?

Many people who have artistic talent put aside their aspirations due to time and money constraints. Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.

Zentangle's approach answers both of these concerns by being accessible and inexpensive.

For people who are convinced they can't draw, the Zentangle method removes that barrier as well. It also removes any intimidation of facing a blank sheet of paper and a novice's work can be put next to a "pro's" work and fit right in.

Many artists uses the Zentangle method to develop and discover patterns and designs to apply to their regular medium, such as quilting or jewelry. Creating a Zentangle tile can also provide crosstraining idea inspiration even when applied to quite different fields such as writing or mathematics.

Within its "elegance of limits" Zentangle's pattern vocabulary draws from a rich well of our human experience. It provides a simple, accessible method to allow personal creativity to flow.

Using lines, shapes, textures, value, and space to create an expressive artwork. This is an artwork that can express ideas or your voice as an artist.

Zentangles

Color pencils give a softer touch to an artwork. Color can be blended.

Depending on the brand, color intensity will vary. Inexpensive color pencils may not be as intense in color. A good pencil sharpener is needed for color pencils....hand held.

Markers are very intense if they are newer. They don't blend but they will overlap color. Oil pastels will give intense color but are harder to control and may become messy or smear. Chalk will be messy, hard to control and needs to be sprayed with a fixative which MUST be done with proper ventilation.

How Do I Make One?

Use a quality piece of paper and a good sharpie marker. Actually, use a variety of sizes of good sharpie markers such as ultra fine tip and fine tip and possibly broad tip.

With scratch paper, begin making bold lines on your paper to break up the space.

Try different organic shapes, incorporate circles, and other geometric shapes.

Be inspired by other zentangles and practice some designs other people have tried. When you see another artists work and you REALLY like it.....it speaks to you or resonates with you. Try the techniques!

Check out the texture poster in class for some designs Mrs. Koehler came up with.

Brainstorm ideas before you just commit to the "one" you want to make.

Express yourself and use your voice as an artist. How can you make this zentangle YOURS!?
