The Nixon Years

Summer of 1969

After being elected, Richard Nixon announced the beginning of troop withdrawals from Vietnam.

Although Nixon started to withdraw troops, he continued the war with the North Vietnam.

August 1969

Nixon announced the strategy for American involvment in Vietnam.

The strategy was known as VIETNAMIZATION, or the gradual withdrawal

of US troops and their replacement with South Vietnamese forces.

November 1969

Americans finally learned about the My Lai Massacre.

This event may have angered the nation and wanted more troops to withdraw from the war.

April 30, 1970

President Nixon announced that American troops had invaded Cambodia. After American citizens heard about this, many began to protest.

May 4, 1970

The National Guard shot into a crowd of campus protesters. This wounded nine people and killed four. America was still very divided about this war.

December 31, 1970

Congress repealed the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. Many became angry after this action because the resolution had given the president near independence in conducting policy in Vietnam.

March 1972

The North Vietnamese set off their largest attack since the Tet offensive. Nixon ordered a massive bombing campaign against North Vietnam. After the bombings halted, Nixon's administration tooks steps to ending American involvment in the war.

January 27, 1973

The United States signed an "agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam." Many Americans believed this was a major step in the right direction.

March 29, 1973

The last US combat troops left for America. The Vietnam War had finally ended for America.

March 1975

The North Vietnamese launched a full-scale invasion against the South. America provided economic aid after Thieu asked for help, but they refused to send troops.

April 30, 1975

North Vietnamese tanks rolled into Saigon and captured the city. Shortly after, South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam.
