Section 504

504 Plan and Schools

Approximately 500,000 students have 504 plans.

Schools comply with Section 504 with the following process:

  • Identify students with disabilities;

  • evaluate those students;

  • if the student is eligible, create a written accommodation plan, often called a "504 Plan".

Sec. 504. No otherwise qualified handicapped individual in the United States, as defined in Section 7 (6), shall, solely by reason of his handicap, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

Parents, teachers, and staff are all a part of the process.
