Right glad I am he was not at this fray."

Lady Capulet is the wife of Lord Capulet. She is the first to talk to Juliet about marrying Paris.

Lord Capulet is the head of the Capulet family. He is happy as long as everyone follows what he has to say. When people do not follow what he says he gets enraged.

Lady Montague is the wife of Lord Montague. She is concerned by Romeo’s sad behaviour at the beginning of the play. When Romeo is banished, she dies of grief.

Lord Montague is the head of the family of Montagues. He decides to make a statue of Juliet at the end of the play.

"And if we meet we shall not 'scape a brawl,

For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring."

Romeo says, "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!"

"This, by his voice, should be a Montague.—

Fetch me my rapier, boy."

The son of Lord and Lady Montague. At the beginning of the play, Romeo is plagued with grief because he loves Rosaline, but she does not love him back. Once Romeo lays his eyes on Juliet, he forgets Rosaline and falls for Juliet who in turn falls in love with him and they marry in secret. Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona. When he hears of Juliet’s death he returns and takes his own life.

Daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet. At the beginning of the play, she is opposed to marriage. After falling in love with Romeo, she is eager to marry him. She is faced with a dilemma when Romeo is banished and she is forced to marry Count Paris. She fakes her death with plans for Romeo to take her from the tomb and wake her, but the communication is messed up and Romeo commits suicide because he thinks she is actually dead and she commits suicide when she sees what he has done.

The cousin of Romeo. He is Romeo’s friend and tries to keep the peace in Verona. Also, he tries to help Romeo get over his wasted love for Rosaline. He tries to stop the fighting in the first scene and between Tybalt and Mercutio. He argues with the Prince that Romeo should not be punished with death for murdering Tybalt because Tybalt would have already received the death penalty for killing Mercutio.

The cousin of Juliet and part of the Capulet family. He is always trying to pick a fight. During the Capulet party, Tybalt complains that Romeo is there and Lord Capulet gets mad at him. Because he is embarrassed by this Tybalt challenges Romeo to a fight, but Romeo refuses. Later, Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo is overcome with revenge and kills Tybalt.

"Then she is well, and nothing can be ill:

Her body sleeps in Capel's monument,..."

"Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?"

"To move is to stir; and to be valiant is to stand:

therefore, if thou art moved, thou runn'st away."

"I saw no man use you a pleasure; if I had, my weapon

should quickly have been out, I warrant you: I dare..."

"Where’s Potpan, that he helps not to take away? He shift a

trencher? He scrape a trencher!"

Balthazar is Romeo’s servant who informs him of Juliet’s death and accompanies him to the area around the tomb.

Peter is a servant of the Capulets who serves Paris at the party and the Nurse at other times in the story.

Gregory and Sampson are Capulet servants who start the fight with Abram in the opening scene.

Anthony and Potpan are Capulet servants who prepare the meal at the Capulet party.

Blubbering and weeping, weeping and blubb'ring.—

Stand up, stand up. Stand an you be a man."

"If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark."

A relative of the Prince, but a friend of Romeo. Mercutio likes to hear himself talk and is constantly joking and making fun of others. He exhibits these traits when teasing Romeo and making fun of the nurse. He fights with Tybalt and is eventually killed.

The Nurse is Juliet’s confidant for the majority of the play. Juliet abandons her as her confidant because the Nurse tells her to marry Paris and forget about Romeo. She is the comedy relief of the play. Various times she goes completely off topic and ignores what is going on in the story.

Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes."

"Such mortal drugs I have; but Mantua's law

Is death to any he that utters them."

"Immoderately she weeps for Tybalt's death,

And therefore have I little talk'd of love;..."

"Three civil brawls bred of an airy word

By thee, old Capulet, and Montague,

Have thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets"

"I could not send it,—here it is again,—

Nor get a messenger to bring it thee,..."

"O, she is rich in beauty, only poor

Tha, when she dies, with beauty dies her store."

Count Paris is a relative of Prince Escalus. He wants to marry Juliet and is perfectly eligible due to his appealing character and looks.

Prince Escalus is in charge of Verona. He regulates the city tries to prevent fights between the two families. He also punishes those that fight.

He loves his herbs and plants and appears to be fed up with Romeo’s constant love for various people, but when Romeo tells him about Juliet he agrees to marry them to bring peace to the enemy families. He offers a solution for Juliet to not marry Paris, but it fails when Romeo does not receive communication in time. Friar Laurence is neutral as he does not affiliate with either families, but with the church.

Friar John is tasked with the responsibility of delivering Friar Laurence’s message to Romeo, but he stuck in a quarantined house and is not able to deliver the message.

The Apothecary sells illegal poison to Romeo because Romeo offers a lot of money for it.
