Personification gives human qualities to things that are not human.

The bright island sun smiled down on the small boy.

Metaphor

Figurative Language

A metaphor compares two unlike things by saying one thing is another.

The boy was a free bird while on the island vacation.

Simile

A simile compares two things using the words like or as.

The boy felt like a free bird while on the island vacation.

Uses of words in imaginative ways to reveal the nature of something by comparing unlike things. Also know as "Figure of Speech".

Figurative language is not meant to be interpreted literally.
