Major Life Events
- Patria supported Minerva in her anti-government efforts and opposed the dictator Trujillo.
- in their attempts to overthrow him, Trujillo had their property and home seized by the government.
- In 1949 Minerva was taken to the capital along with her mother, and they were placed under house arrest.
- Maria and Minerva were arrested and taken to La Cuarenta. La Cuarenta was a torture prison.
- They were released on February 7 1960, but both were again taken back on March 18.
The Murder of the Mirabal Sisters
- On November 25, 1960 the sisters were driving home and they were stopped by the secret police Trujillo had sent.
- The Police pulled them out of the car and seperated them, and murdered them.
Life Growing Up
Maria Teresa Mirabal
- The Mirabal sisters were from Salcedo, Dominican Republic.
- The Mirabal sisters grew up in a affluent family. They were educated women at a time where most women did not recieve as good of an education.
- They were born to Mercedes Reyes Camilo and Don Enrique who was a succesful farmer and merchant.
- Minerva was influenced by the famous words of Fidel Castro," Condemn me, it does not matter history will absolve me!" She was also influenced by her uncle.
- They were all influenced by the friends they had made at imaculada whose relatives had been tortured and killed but Trujillo's army.
- she was the youngest of the sisters.
- she looked up to her older sisters and later joined them in their political activities.
- she was famous for saying,"perhaps what we have most near death, but the idea does not frighten me, we shall continue to fight for that which is just."
Patria Mercedes Mirabal
- She is famous for saying "We cannot allow our children to grow up in the corrupt and tyrannical regime, we have to fight against it, and i am willing to give up everything, including my life if necessary."
- She married when she was 17, and had 4 children.
Changes They Made on Society
Minerva Argentina Mirabal
- Minervas political influences included changes occuring in other latin American Countries.
- Today there are memorials dedicated the Butterflies. The Butterflies were an underground resistance political group.
- There is now and International Day Against violence against women, In the honor of The Mirabal Sisters.
- She was famous for saying, "it is a source of happiness to do whatever can be done for our country that suffers so many anguishes, it is sad to stay with ones arms crossed.
- Minerva was the first to become involved in the underground movement to overthrow Trujillo.
- I find it courageous what they did for their country.
- They not only did it for their country but they stood up for the others that were subjected to the torture of Rafeal Trujillo.
