Introduction to invasive species made the Nene numbers decline to just 30 species left. However, reintroduction of the nene and breeding in the Hawaii Volcanoes national park has been successful.
Two main reasons of the extinction is because, over grazing livestock, and aggressive non-indigenous species taking over the land.

The park begins at sea level and continues up to the peak of Mauna Loa mountain. It further stretches to the Mauna Loa's Wilderness Area. This is where tourists may explore lava trails and show the volcanic beauty of "barren lava twisted into nightmarish shapes."

Seven ecological life zones include seacoast, lowland, mid-elevation woodland, rain forest, upland forest and woodland, sub-alpine and alpine/aeolian are included within park boundaries.
Due to Food limitation, climate change, and human Interaction these seals are now rare to see in Hawaii.
