Govern or Get Out!

Most of Florida's population in the 1800s was Spanish colonists, English Traders, Seminole indians, and runaway slaves.

Jackson illegally stormed into Florida with an army. Instead of apologizing to Spain, Monroe sent blunt message saying "Govern Florida properly or get out".

Indian Removal Act

In 1830, Andrew Jackson initiated the Indian Removal Act. Congress passed a law that said the Indians had a right to keep their land, but Jackson refused and forced them west with military force.

The Seminoles Never Give In

After a period of war, the Seminoles still never gave in, so the United States Government gave up on them.

Andrew Jackson wanted to take control over the rest of the land in the United States area. During 1818 Andrew Jackson invaded Florida and tried to kick out the Seminoles.
