What other factors are involved in consent?

Consent is a voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity.

  • Affirmative Consent--> Yes means yes
  • the voluntary approval of what is done or proposed by another; permission; agreement in opinion or sentiment
  • Effective consent
  • Consent that is informed and freely and actively given. Effective consent requires mutually understandable words or actions indicating a willingness to engage in mutually agreed-upon sexual activity.
  • Acceptance of gender norms
  • Women typically give consent verbally and non-verbally, and also for both in consent with partner
  • Males typically give consent non-verbally, and look for non-verbal clues in consent with partner
