Hazel Grace Lancaster: Hazel is slightly depressed sixteen year-old thyroid cancer patient with an in-between personality.

Augustus Waters: Augustus is an upbeat seventeen year old boy diagnosed with osteosarcoma at a young age. Due to his disease, his right leg is amputated.

Issac: Issac is Augustus' best friend. He has eye cancer and goes blind, so he finds support in Hazel and Augustus.

Mrs. Lancaster: Hazel's mom is her best friend and is described to be very enthusiastic.

Peter Van Houten: Van Houten is the author of Hazel's favorite book: 'An Imperial Affliction'.

Conflicts

Man vs Nature: Hazel is battling cancer within her lungs.

Man vs Self: 'An Imperial Affliction' ends in mid-sentence so Hazel has many unanswered questions for the author about the book and it's true ending.

Man vs Self: Hazel tries to not to build a relationship with Augustus so that there will be one less 'scar' left after she dies.
