Spanish Civil War

War

  • 1931- The Spanish Monarchy was overthrow by a republican government
  • Country divided into Socialist left and Conservative right
  • 1936- the Left won majority in the elections and the right was extremely mad
  • The right decided to overthrow the government and war broke out
  • Nationalists got leaders (Mussolini, Hitler) to side with them
  • Franco and Nationalists won the war and Franco became a dictator of Spain until he died in 1975

Orwell's Involvement in the Army

  • First a die hard communist until he met John McNair and experienced the totalitarian government
  • Gained a strong sense of Nationalism and fought against fascism and any oppressive rule
  • The main ideas shown in the “all seeing government”, poster, extreme right-wing fascism in 1984
  • Quickly became a corporal due to previous experience with police training and Cadet Corps
  • Began fighting for the Socialists in January 1937 but was shot in the throat by a sniper in May of the same year, forcing him to leave the army
  • Orwell began to see the mistrust in the republican cause and people began questioning his loyalty because he was a part of a Marxist group (called POUM)
  • Him and his wife left Spain in July 1937

Writing

  • 1984 showed hatred for totalitarian government
  • influenced greatly by John McNair of the ILP and writing expressed that
  • Homage to Catalonia is an example of his writing about betrayal
  • He dealt with Fascism in 1984 with strong motifs
