Fly-By-Wire

Fly-by-wire (FBW) is a system that replaces the conventional manual flight controls of an aircraft with an electronic interface.

Advantages

Provides many advantages over conventional mechanical flight control systems.

  • reduced in weight and volume allowing easier maintenance.
  • electronic systems require a lot less maintenance

Responds flexibly to changing aerodynamic conditions

  • Improved control performance
  • Automatic signals are sent by the aircraft's computers to perform functions without the pilot's input.

Total elimination of the cables and pulleys historically used to control the flight surfaces.

  • very expensive to manufacture and maintain the cable systems, because of weight

The ability to operate the aircraft the total elimination of the cables and pulleys historically used to control the flight surfaces.

  • However, this places a much greater emphasis on electrical power.
  • This problem is countered by new airplane models that use multiple electrical backups such as ram air turbines which do not require any onboard electrical source.
