The Tourist Gaze

Leisure and Travel in Contemporary Societies

What is the Tourist Gaze?

Future of Tourism

  • Necessary to consider what makes a distinct tourist gaze, there must be certain aspects of the destination that is different from the tourist’s own

  • There will be a shift from ‘old tourism’ which involved packaging and standardization to ‘new tourism’ which is segmented, flexible and customized
  • Essentially gazing, is traveling and seeing scenes and landscapes which are out of the ordinary

  • Tourist gaze is not singular, it is socially organized and concurrent with the trends and social norms of the times

  • Gaze is constructed both by media exposure and collection of signs when traveling

Importance & Development of

the Tourist Gaze

  • Being a Tourist is a ‘Modern’ experience

  • Marker of status in modern society

  • 13th & 14th century religious pilgrims

  • 18th century Classical Grand Tour

  • 19th century Romantic Grand Tour

Theoretical approach to

Tourism Study

  • Tourist is a kind of contemporary pilgrim, seeking authenticity in other ‘times’ and other ‘places’ away from their own

  • However, due to economic benefits ‘Tourist Spaces’ are constructed, what MacCannell calls ‘Staged Authenticity’

  • Argument made about human culture as being ‘staged’, cultures are invented, remade and reorganized

Importance & Development of

the Tourist Gaze

  • Travel is now thought to occupy 40 percent of available ‘free time’

  • Crucial part of modern life

that traveling and holidaying is necessary

  • ‘I need a holiday’ is an idea that people’s physical and mental health will be restored
