Why the "green revolution" failured in Africa
Benefits of Intercropping
- Intercropping provided a denser coverage of the ground thus protecting the soil.
- Europeans thought the "clear-field, one-crop" technique, was a universal technique which was proven false.
Intercropping
- The Western Agriculturist perferred a larger land with only one type of crop planted.
- However, African farmers followed their own tradition in growing mixtures of crops in a land.
Imposing Transfers of Technology
- Instead of allowing local knowledge, experiment and innovation, western agriculturists thought that it was better to impose transfers of technology from "advanced regions".
Little Effort Required
- The Plant breeders did a small amount of work on locally important crops. In the Sahara Desert, millet and sorghum are the main cereals. In growing them together , they mature quicker!
