Sustainability !
What is environmental sustainability?
Promoting Environmental Sustainability
-Green building
- A green building is a building that has high-efficiency in the use of natural resources, water and materials that are used in designing and constructing the building.
- Environmentally Preferable Purchasing ,
often referred to as “green purchasing,“
is the affirmative selection
and acquisition of products and services
- A “green” production process refers to an effort to lessen the impact of the manufacturing process on the environment.
climate change ?.....
- Climate change is a change in the statistical
distribution of weather over periods of time that
range from decades to millions of years.
Here are some ADVERSE EFFECTS …
- Rising of sea level
- Flooding
- Change of weather pattern
CHANGE OF WEATHER PATTERN
GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near- surface air and oceans.
The Green
House Effect
- The rays of the sun warm the Earth.
- Heat from the Earth then travels back into the atmosphere.
- The gases in the atmosphere stop some of the heat from escaping into space and send them back
to the earth.
What would be our
globe without green house effect
- If there were no green house gases earth would have an expected temperature of 5.3 C.
- But the planet’s actual temperature is between 18-19 C.

&
Enhanced green house effect
What is Enhanced green house effect ?
- An increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases leads to an increase in the magnitude of the greenhouse effect..
- We are receiving energy faster than we reradiate it.
What can we do ?
Simply we can be energy efficient
nation
We can be environmentally sustainable
by using renewable energy resources.
What is renewable energy?.....
- Renewable Energy is a form of energy source that is replaced by a natural process at a rate that is equal to or faster than the rate at which that resource is being consumed.
Types of renewable energy sources
Hydropower
Wind power
Solar power
Bio-mass
Fuel cells
Geothermal energy
Types of renewable energy sources possible in Sri Lanka
- Hydropower or hydraulic power is the power that is derived from the force or energy of moving water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes.
Hydroelectricity is the main source of energy in Sri Lanka, taking a share of nearly 45% of the total installed capacity in December 2009.
Currently, ten large hydroelectric power stations are in operation, all between 38 to 210 MW, with the Victoria Dam being the largest hydroelectric source.

Wind power
What is wind power.......
- Wind power is the conversion of wind energy
into a useful form of energy,
such as using wind turbines to make electricity,
wind mills for mechanical power,
wind pumps for pumping water or drainage etc.
Sri Lanka’s First commercial wind power plant
in Puthlam was opened on2010-03-22.
Capacity is 10 MW
Other Novel Designs
Why wind power ?....
- Wind is available free of cost
- Wind power doesn’t contribute to the exhaust of deadly pollutants.
- After purchasing the wind turbines, there are no more considerable investments involved.
SOLAR POWER
How do we convert sunlight in to electricity ?
- Using photovoltaic cells.
SOLAR CELLS
- A solar cell is a device that converts the energy of sunlight directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect.
- Assemblies of cells are used to make solar panels, solar modules, or photovoltaic arrays.
Process of Power generation in solar cells
Solar power in Sri Lanka
Why solar power ?.......
- The lack of pollution given off by solar panels when generating electricity.
- Another advantage of solar energy is that the energy source (the sun) is completely renewable.
- Ability to harness power in remote locations.
Environmental Concern
http://apes-cs.blogspot.com/
- Concentrating solar power which normally focuses the sun's energy to boil water which is then used to provide power.
- Sterling engine dishes which use a sterling cycle engine to power a generator.

Environmental sustainability is
about meeting the needs of the
present without compromising
future generations regarding the
environment.
